If you have a strong passion for sweets and grew up immersed in the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a new attraction may soon become a must-visit on your travel list.
Switzerland is already renowned as a key destination for chocolate enthusiasts, with Maison Cailler in Broc, Gruyère, standing out as a top spot. This historic site has been producing the iconic Cailler chocolate since the late 1800s, making it one of the world’s oldest operational chocolate factories.
Currently, visitors can explore the factory, participate in guided tours, and enjoy a museum showcasing the history of Cailler. Additionally, guests have the opportunity to engage in chocolate-making workshops to create their own confections like truffles, all while indulging in various tastings.
Exciting plans are in the works to expand the current 2,000 m² attraction to nearly 30,000 m², promising a remarkable “sensory experience” for guests. The proposed park aims to offer a comprehensive journey through the world of cocoa, taking around four to six hours to fully explore.
With approximately 400,000 visitors annually, Maison Cailler is already one of Switzerland’s most popular museums, and projections suggest this number could double in the initial phase of the park’s expansion.
The future developments include a cable car for convenient transportation from the parking area to the factory, as well as a ‘flying theatre’ providing breathtaking views of the Swiss landscape. A significant cocoa greenhouse is also planned, allowing visitors to witness the cultivation and harvesting of chocolate ingredients.
For those seeking even more chocolate-themed enjoyment, a new hotel will cater to overnight guests looking to satisfy their sweet cravings. If the project proceeds as planned, the initial phase is expected to open by 2030.
Accessing Maison Cailler is convenient via train from Montreux, offering a delightful journey on a themed train through picturesque Swiss scenery. Travelers from the UK typically fly to Geneva, a short 90-minute flight away, with airlines such as easyJet, TUI, and British Airways offering services.
Exploring Broc itself is worthwhile, whether during the enchanting winter months with snow-covered Alps or in the vibrant summer season when the mountains are lush and green. Visitors can explore the captivating Château de Gruyères, known for its ornate oil paintings and historical treasures.
Just a short distance away, at La Maison du Gruyère, visitors can experience a functioning cheese factory and sample the renowned local cheese. Guided tours are available for observing the aging process of the large cheese wheels to achieve perfection.
