Sabastian Sawe made history by setting a new marathon world record at the London Marathon with a remarkable time of 1:59:30, surpassing Kelvin Kiptum’s previous record of 2:00:35. Sawe, a Kenyan runner, secured his victory for the second consecutive year in a thrilling race that saw him edge out Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha.
The intense competition between Sawe and Kejelcha culminated in a dramatic finish, with Sawe breaking away in the final stretch to secure his place in the record books. Kejelcha also finished the race in under two hours, claiming second place in a closely contested battle between the two elite athletes.
Steve Cram, an Olympic silver medallist, was left speechless by Sawe’s outstanding performance, hailing it as a historic moment in the world of marathon running. Paula Radcliffe echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the global impact of Sawe’s achievement.
Sawe, aged 30, confidently expressed his belief in breaking the record before the race and credited the enthusiastic crowd for their support during his historic run. His exhilaration upon seeing his record-breaking time reflected his dedication and hard work leading up to the event.
In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia also made headlines by winning for the second consecutive year, setting a new women’s London Marathon record with a time of 2:15:41. The race saw fierce competition from Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei, both from Kenya, who finished in second and third place, respectively.
Additionally, in the wheelchair races, Marcel Hug of Switzerland clinched his sixth consecutive victory in the men’s competition, matching the record set by David Weir. Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, successfully defended her title in the women’s wheelchair race.
