Santiago de Compostela Airport in Spain will be shutting down temporarily for maintenance work, leading to the cancellation of all flights from April 23 to May 27. The closure will affect several airlines, including Vueling, Ryanair, Iberia, and British Airways, which operate at the airport with connections to popular destinations like Barcelona and Madrid.
Approximately 4,500 British travelers could be impacted by the closure, as there are usually 30 weekly flights from Stansted, Gatwick, and Heathrow to Santiago de Compostela Airport. The airport operator, Aena, confirmed that the closure is necessary for runway resurfacing works and emphasized that no air traffic, takeoffs, or landings will occur during this period.
Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for flight status updates, schedule changes, or rebooking options. Travelers planning to visit Santiago de Compostela during the closure period can consider flying to alternative airports in the region, such as A Coruña Airport, located approximately 42 miles north, or Vigo Airport, around 61 miles south of Santiago de Compostela.
Santiago de Compostela, renowned for its Gothic and Romanesque architecture, serves as the capital of Galicia in northwest Spain and is famous as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
