Rory McIlroy Takes Break in UK Before US Open

Date:

Rory McIlroy is currently enjoying a brief respite at his newly acquired residence in the UK before heading to the US Open. The world No. 2 recently participated in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, securing a tie for 12th place.

Following his performance in Ohio, the 37-year-old golfer, gearing up for the third major tournament of the year, achieved a score of four under par. However, McIlroy opted to skip the Canadian Open this week to return to England.

After a 3,650-mile journey from Dublin, Ohio to Wentworth, McIlroy is now settling into his lavish mansion on an exclusive Surrey estate for a six-day stay before embarking on another approximately 3,500-mile trip to Southampton, New York, for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Choosing to spend quality time at his family home, McIlroy will miss the chance to compete in the Canadian Open, which offers a total prize pool of £7.3 million, with the winner taking home £1.3 million.

“I had a couple of weeks off and we got ourselves settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days,” McIlroy mentioned ahead of the Memorial Tournament.

The £9 million mansion, acquired in 2023, was already a prestigious property before McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, began renovating it. The six-bedroom residence has undergone expansions and renovations as the couple, along with their daughter Poppy, move from Florida.

Before their move to the UK, McIlroy and Stoll resided in a luxurious £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, which they purchased from golf legend Ernie Els in 2017. While their Jupiter community included notable figures, their new Surrey residence now neighbors esteemed personalities like Elton John and Cliff Richard, with the Sultan of Brunei being the most affluent with a net worth of £22.3 billion.

Reflecting on his performance at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy acknowledged his challenges with driver inconsistency but remains optimistic about his prospects at the upcoming US Open.

As he focuses on clinching a second major title of the season at Shinnecock Hills after defending his Masters title in April, McIlroy emphasized his dedication to continual improvement in preparation for the tournament.
