Pope Leo XIV has prioritized a personal mission to visit African countries with a rapidly growing Catholic population. During an 11-day journey, he aims to focus global attention on Africa as stated by a high-ranking Vatican official. The visit underscores the increasing significance of Africa in Catholicism, with recent data showing a notable rise in the number of baptized Catholics on the continent.
With over a fifth of the world’s Catholics residing in Africa, approximately 288 million individuals, the region is witnessing significant growth in its Catholic community. This visit marks Pope Leo’s second major international tour since his election, making him history’s first US-born Pope. The itinerary includes stops in 11 cities across four countries – Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea.
Except for Algeria, all countries have substantial Catholic followers, making it the first papal visit to the North African nation. Algeria holds deep historical importance for Pope Leo XIV, being the birthplace of St. Augustine. The Pope’s adherence to Augustine’s teachings, which emphasize community and humility, played a crucial role in his journey to leading the Catholic Church. He plans to visit the region where he once served as a bishop and conduct Mass there.
A key focus of the visit will be fostering dialogue with the Islamic community to promote peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims amidst global conflicts. The Rector of the Basilica anticipates that Pope Leo will provide encouragement for faith and efforts toward creating a harmonious world.
While the Catholic community in Algeria is relatively small, comprising around 9,000 predominantly foreign members compared to the Sunni Muslim community of about 47 million, efforts towards unity and peace continue. The Archbishop of Algiers, French Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, emphasizes the church’s role in building a cohesive society despite religious differences.
Following criticism from President Donald Trump regarding the Iran war, Pope Leo reiterated the Vatican’s commitment to peace and reconciliation rooted in Gospel principles. Despite Trump’s remarks on social media questioning the Pope’s stance, the Pope remains steadfast in his mission to uphold the Church’s values and promote global harmony through dialogue and understanding.
