Police in East Sussex have released images of two individuals they are seeking to identify in connection with a suspected arson attack at a mosque. The incident, which occurred in Peacehaven, saw two masked individuals spray accelerant on the mosque’s entrance and set it ablaze. Emergency services responded promptly, extinguishing the fire and ensuring the safety of individuals inside. However, the mosque and a nearby vehicle sustained significant damage.
Detective Inspector Gavin Patch described the attack as “appalling and reckless,” emphasizing that it is being investigated as arson with intent to endanger life. The police are appealing to the community for any information that could lead to the identification of the suspects, one of whom was wearing a distinct black jacket with a Pre London logo, while the other had bright red gloves.
Superintendent Rachel Swinney acknowledged the impact of the incident on the Peacehaven community and assured increased police presence and patrols at places of worship to offer support and reassurance. She emphasized the zero-tolerance approach towards hate crimes and urged individuals to report any safety concerns or criminal behavior.
Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, condemned the attack, urging unity and solidarity in the face of such incidents. Mothin Ali of the Green Party and Chris Ward, Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, also expressed their dismay over the attack, advocating for clarity on the motives and denouncing violence and hatred.
A spokesperson for the mosque expressed deep sadness over the incident, emphasizing that such acts do not reflect the values of the community. The mosque will remain closed until the completion of police investigations. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Sussex Police online or by phone, quoting Operation Spey.
