“Paddington Bear Statue Vandalized Again in Southampton”

Date:

Paddington Bear’s bench in Southampton has been vandalized once again, this time by miscreants who damaged the beloved bear’s seating spot. The statue of the famous marmalade-loving bear has unexpectedly become a target for senseless vandals, resulting in missing legs and several slats on the wooden bench following the attack on Sunday. The police have initiated an investigation, and the council is actively working to repair the damaged bench and relocate Paddington to a new home.

The incident has sparked online discussions among locals questioning why individuals engage in destructive behavior and proposing the installation of CCTV cameras in the area to deter future acts of vandalism. The statue, unveiled in October 2024 as part of a series of 23 Paddington statues nationwide in celebration of the Paddington movie release in Peru, stands at 42 inches tall and features Paddington in his signature red hat and blue overcoat, holding a marmalade sandwich near the Westquay shopping center.

Following the recent vandalism, Go! Southampton, the organization overseeing the statue, expressed disappointment over the damage but reassured the public that Paddington will persevere. The statue has been temporarily relocated for safekeeping, and efforts are underway to restore the bench and identify a new location for Paddington. Local community members have expressed their dismay online, with some labeling the vandals as “morons” and advocating for enhanced security measures in the vicinity.

In a previous incident, two RAF engineers were convicted of damaging a Paddington statue in Newbury, Berkshire, and subsequently ordered to perform community service and contribute towards the repair costs. The judge criticized their actions, stating that they contradicted the values embodied by Paddington Bear. The replaced statue now stands in place of the vandalized one as a reminder of the enduring spirit of Paddington.
