OBR Chief Resigns Over Confidential Documents Breach

Date:

The chief of the Budget watchdog has resigned following a significant breach of confidential documents. Richard Hughes, the head of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), announced his decision to step down due to the embarrassing error, which was deemed the most severe failure in the watchdog’s history. Budget information is closely guarded as it can impact the financial markets.

An investigation revealed that the OBR’s forecast was made public online almost an hour before the Chancellor’s official statement to Parliament. The inquiry attributed the blunder to IT vulnerabilities rather than external cyber threats or intentional internal leaks.

Interestingly, the probe disclosed that sensitive documents were also accessed prematurely before the Spring Statement in March. However, no malicious activity was detected, and it was deemed likely to be harmless.

Amidst this, Keir Starmer defended Ms. Reeves against accusations of misleading the public regarding the state of public finances leading up to the Budget. The Chancellor faced criticism for suggesting a significant budget shortfall that contradicted earlier forecasts of a surplus.

In the run-up to the Budget announcement, Ms. Reeves hinted at potential income tax increases to address lowered economic productivity forecasts. Despite initial indications, she later abandoned the plan, citing more positive economic projections.

The OBR later revealed that it had informed the Chancellor in September of better-than-expected financial prospects, forecasting a deficit of £2.5 billion by the end of the parliamentary term. The watchdog initially predicted a surplus of £4.2 billion for the Chancellor before her press conference.

Keir Starmer expressed support for the Chancellor’s Budget decisions, emphasizing the importance of investing in public services, addressing the cost of living crisis, and fostering national growth. He defended the choices made, highlighting the dangers of reckless borrowing and praising the government’s fiscal strategy.

Responding to claims of misleading the Cabinet, the Chancellor clarified that detailed budget numbers are typically shared with ministers on the morning of the Budget announcement. She denied any Treasury involvement in the premature leak of budget information.
