Norway Considers Ban on Smart Glasses in Public Areas

Date:

Smart glasses have raised concerns in Norway, prompting the government to propose a temporary ban on their use in certain public spaces. The aim is to address the potential benefits and risks associated with AI glasses. This move reflects a broader trend of countries grappling with the impact of new technologies on society, such as restrictions on social media for children and teenagers.

The Norwegian government intends to present the proposal for the ban to parliament, focusing on locations where privacy is crucial, like healthcare facilities, gyms with changing areas, and places frequented by children. The ban could encompass various settings, including schools, parks, and shopping centers, to safeguard individuals’ privacy.

This temporary ban would offer authorities time to assess the impact of smart glasses and consider whether permanent regulations are necessary. The government clarified that it does not seek a complete prohibition but rather aims to define where these devices are acceptable. Exceptions may be made for vulnerable groups to enable beneficial uses of smart glasses in specific situations.

Privacy Advocates Support Norway’s Initiative

Adam Smith from Privacy International applauded Norway’s decision as a means to protect individuals from intrusive data collection by tech companies. The move aligns with the expectation of privacy in daily activities and contrasts with California, where a recent attempt to restrict smart glasses usage was vetoed by the governor.

Meta, the company behind AI glasses developed with Ray-Ban, emphasizes privacy and responsible use of the technology. Despite these efforts, some businesses have halted sales of AI glasses due to privacy concerns, reflecting a growing backlash against these devices.

Similar debates on AI glasses are unfolding globally, with organizations like the UK Cinema Association implementing measures to address privacy and piracy issues related to camera-enabled smart glasses. The ongoing discussions underscore the need for clear guidelines on the use of such technologies in public spaces.
