MP Karl Turner Suspended by Labour Chief Whip

Date:

MP Karl Turner, known for criticizing the Government, has had the Labour whip removed. Chief Whip Jonathan Reynolds notified Turner in writing on Tuesday of his suspension due to recent conduct issues. Turner had received warnings for making derogatory comments about fellow Labour MPs and exhibiting intimidating behavior in the Commons, as reported by the Mirror.

Turner expressed surprise at the news of his whip suspension, stating he had not been officially informed by the party whips. He took to social media to clarify his position, indicating that journalists had been informed before him.

The Hull East MP has been vocal in opposing the Government’s proposal to eliminate jury trials for offenses carrying less than a three-year sentence. Additionally, he has criticized Keir Starmer and Downing Street.

Recently, Turner commented on the alleged theft of former PM chief of staff Morgan McSweeney’s phone, suggesting it was a conspiracy theory. However, he later acknowledged the theft and emphasized following proper procedures.

In an interview, Turner criticized McSweeney, labeling him a “lying b******.” He also condemned the Prime Minister for preventing Andy Burnham from standing as the party’s candidate, attributing Labour’s electoral setback to this decision.

Turner, a former shadow solicitor general, linked his opposition to jury trial reforms to a past incident where he was wrongly accused of handling stolen goods. Despite his suspension, he affirmed his commitment to speaking truth to power, particularly regarding the importance of jury trials in upholding democracy.

The suspension is subject to review at a later stage as Turner aims to reconcile with his party, the Prime Minister, and the Government to address justice system issues and fulfill the mandate entrusted by voters.
