“Man airlifted after crocodile attack in Western Australia”

Date:

A young man was airlifted to the hospital following a sudden crocodile attack at a popular camping area. The man, in his twenties, was attacked by a large crocodile on the western coast of Australia on Saturday. The incident took place at a beach in the Kimberley region, near Hidden Creek on the Dampier Peninsula, approximately 1300 miles north of Perth, the state capital.

The camping site where the attack occurred is a well-liked spot for tourists and is situated about 31 miles north of Broome on the coastline of Western Australia. The WA coast is abundant with tidal creeks, mangroves, and rivers, providing a suitable habitat for aggressive saltwater crocodiles.

After the attack, the man was first taken to Broome Hospital in stable condition before being transferred to Royal Perth Hospital the next day via the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which offers emergency medical assistance in remote Australian regions.

A representative from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions stated that they were informed of the incident and are currently investigating. This marks the second crocodile attack in the Kimberley within a short time frame. Saltwater crocodiles are prevalent along the Kimberley coast, known for their aggressiveness, especially compared to freshwater crocodiles.

Australia attracts a significant number of British tourists yearly, with over 600,000 visitors in 2024, showing an increase from the previous year. Crocodiles are ancient reptiles, with origins dating back millions of years, surviving the extinction that wiped out dinosaurs.
