Around 70 firefighters responded to a large fire at an industrial site on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich, south-east London. Ten fire engines were deployed following reports of the fire at 6:13 pm yesterday, according to the London Fire Brigade.
To address the situation, two 32-meter turntable ladders were utilized as water towers to combat the fire from an elevated position. Despite the fire being contained, heavy smoke persists in the area, leading to the closure of several roads due to smoke dispersion, as stated by the London Fire Brigade. Residents have been advised to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution.
Following a home game, Charlton Athletic FC issued a travel advisory to its supporters due to road closures caused by the fire incident. The fire was controlled by 9:04 pm, but extinguishing efforts are ongoing as of 9:30 pm, with firefighters remaining on-site to ensure complete extinguishment.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Several roads have been closed for safety reasons related to the fire and smoke, with alternative routes recommended for northbound drivers. Southbound traffic through the Blackwall Tunnel may also encounter disruptions.
The incident prompted the response of ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters from various stations including East Greenwich, Greenwich, Deptford, and Poplar, according to the London Fire Brigade.
