Commuter Chaos in London: Blackwall Tunnel Closure and Tube Line Delays Cause Major Disruption
London’s morning commute faced turmoil today with the closure of the Blackwall Tunnel and delays on three underground lines during rush hour peak.
Commuters using the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines experienced significant delays as faulty CCTV cameras in four London tunnels, including Blackwall, led to extensive traffic congestion. The affected tunnels also included Rotherhithe, Hanger Lane, and Upper Thames Street, with the Blackwall Tunnel expected to remain shut until 10 am.
Travelers endured frustrating journeys to work, with reports of being stationary for up to 20 minutes at a time.
The Rotherhithe Tunnel has since reopened, but delays persist on The Highway towards Tower Bridge. Additionally, queues are forming at the Woolwich Ferry, which is operating with reduced capacity.
The Piccadilly line has resumed service after a temporary suspension between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan line remains partially closed between Baker Street and Aldgate due to a track fault at Baker Street.
Commuters faced prolonged traffic delays as four major tunnels were shut down due to technical issues with their CCTV cameras. Frustrated individuals expressed concerns about package deliveries being affected and being stranded in heavy traffic.
Transport for London (TfL) advised passengers to utilize alternative routes and stay updated on travel conditions. The closure of the Rotherhithe Tunnel until 3 pm and ongoing delays on various routes added to the commuter woes.

Aldgate Station experienced partial closure due to the ongoing track fault at Baker Street. Although the Blackwall Tunnel has reopened, drivers continue to face extensive delays.
Expectations for delays on the Elizabeth line between Romford and Shenfield until 10 am were issued, with alternative travel options being provided.
In response to the technical difficulties in the major tunnels, tickets were accepted at no extra cost across various transportation modes. The closures and delays across the affected tunnels and underground lines caused widespread inconvenience to commuters during the morning rush.
The closure of the Blackwall Tunnel, coupled with delays on the surrounding roads, led to significant traffic disruptions in the area. The A2 route witnessed congestion from Kidbrooke through Blackheath to Trafalgar Road in Greenwich, along with delays at the Lower Lea Crossing from Silvertown.
