Keir Starmer faced internal dissent as a Conservative-led attempt to refer him to a parliamentary body for potentially misleading the House of Commons regarding the Peter Mandelson controversy met with resistance. A total of 15 Labour Members of Parliament defied party orders, with notable figures like former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Emma Lewell opposing the three-line directive to vote against the referral. Additional dissenters included left-leaning MPs Richard Burgon, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Nadia Whittome, Kate Osborne, and Apsana Begum.
Despite the rebellion, the government quashed the motion with a decisive 112-vote margin, as 335 MPs rejected the proposal to initiate a parliamentary inquiry into ethical misconduct. Prior to the vote, Cabinet Minister Darren Jones criticized Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, labeling the move as a politically motivated charade that diverted attention from crucial national issues.
Prime Minister Johnson dismissed the referral as a pre-election ploy by adversaries to undermine his credibility. Addressing the Labour Party, Johnson emphasized his commitment to transparency and accused opponents of orchestrating a smear campaign to hinder the government’s agenda.
During the subsequent parliamentary debate, MP Emma Lewell questioned the Prime Minister’s refusal to testify before the Privileges Committee to defend his integrity. Expressing disappointment with the handling of the situation, Lewell highlighted the public’s disillusionment and criticized the government’s handling of the affair as out of touch.
Lewell condemned the party’s enforcement of voting against the motion, characterizing it as perpetuating a negative narrative of concealment and implicating honorable colleagues in a potential cover-up.
