Keir Starmer’s former top aide, Morgan McSweeney, will face questioning from Members of Parliament on the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the controversy surrounding the vetting process of Peter Mandelson.
McSweeney, who has been linked closely to Lord Mandelson, stepped down in February due to his involvement in Mandelson’s appointment to the Washington DC position.
The political strategist is scheduled to testify before the influential parliamentary committee next week, following an anticipated appearance this week by Cat Little, the highest-ranking civil servant in the Cabinet Office, according to the Press Association.
The issue has caused significant trouble for Starmer as the Labour Party braces for challenging local elections next month.
In the midst of the turmoil, Pat McFadden affirmed Starmer’s leadership, stating that the decision to appoint Lord Mandelson did not jeopardize Labour’s long-term plans.
McFadden defended the initial appointment of Mandelson based on his political and business experience, despite subsequent revelations leading to Mandelson’s resignation.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about potential losses for Labour in London, with a recent poll indicating a shift in support towards the Green Party in some key boroughs.
Moreover, discussions in Parliament have revolved around various topics, including the cost of living, allegations of lobbying for government positions, and inquiries into appointment processes within the administration.
