Members of Jeremy Corbyn’s latest left-wing initiative have decided to officially adopt the name “Your Party” following a voting session at their inaugural conference in Liverpool. Despite facing internal conflicts, attendees had the opportunity to choose between various name options, including “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many,” before ultimately settling on “Your Party.”
In announcing the decision, Mr. Corbyn stated, “Your Party is the chosen name.” The assembly also voted to establish a committee of “ordinary members” to steer the party, as opposed to a more conventional single leadership model, with the collective leadership approach winning by a narrow margin of 51.6% to 48.4%. Consequently, neither Mr. Corbyn nor former Labour MP Zarah Sultana will be eligible to contest the leadership position.
Ms. Sultana, who abstained from the conference’s initial day due to a dispute over expulsions, hailed the outcome as “exciting,” emphasizing her longstanding advocacy for enhanced member democracy. She remarked, “Seeing members opt for collective leadership is truly thrilling. Together, we are laying the foundation for a new socialist party that is profoundly democratic and driven by a widespread movement. This party will be governed by its members, not MPs. This marks just the commencement.”
A spokesperson for Your Party remarked that the vote underscored a distinct approach to politics, emphasizing a grassroots, member-driven model rather than the conventional top-down structure. The party aims to provide a democratic, accountable, and community-focused alternative to the prevailing Westminster landscape, which is perceived as being detached from everyday citizens and beholden to corporate interests.
