Hansard tragically passed away following his participation in the Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase during the initial day of the renowned Cheltenham Festival. The eight-year-old horse, under the training of Gary and Josh Moore, entered the Arkle race as an unlikely contender but unfortunately had to be pulled up due to sustaining an injury.
In a statement issued by the Jockey Club, it was disclosed that Hansard suffered a fatal injury while running in the second race of the day. Despite immediate attention from expert veterinary professionals, it was determined that the most humane course of action for the horse’s well-being was euthanasia.
The Arkle Chase at 2 pm saw Kargese emerge victorious, trained by the well-known Willie Mullins. Jockey Danny Mullins, who rode Kargese to victory, shared his experience with ITV, expressing his appreciation for the horse’s performance and acknowledging the teamwork that contributed to the win.
Horse racing, like any sport, carries inherent risks, but The Jockey Club, responsible for organizing prominent events like the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, diligently works to minimize these risks. Significant investments have been made in equine welfare by the racing industry, totaling over £63 million since 2000, focusing on areas such as veterinary care, education, and research.
The British racing sector operates under the guidance of an independently-led Horse Welfare Board, implementing a strategic plan named ‘A Life Well Lived,’ which has shown positive outcomes. Noteworthy statistics reveal a decline in fallers during horse races over the past 21 years, with the fatal injury rate in 2025 standing at a minimal 0.22% of the total 86,300 runners.
Various safety measures have been implemented to enhance horse welfare, including adjustments to jump markers based on equine vision research, the adoption of padded hurdles to reduce fall incidents, and the establishment of a thorough review process following any racecourse fatality within 48 hours.
Collaboration with esteemed welfare organizations such as World Horse Welfare, RSPCA, and Blue Cross is a regular practice within the racing industry to ensure compliance with the highest standards of animal care. Engaging the public through educational visits to studs, training yards, and aftercare facilities has proven effective in altering perceptions of horse welfare positively.
National Racehorse Week, occurring annually from August 22nd to 31st, provides an opportunity for free visits to these facilities, contributing to increased awareness and understanding of horse care practices. Notably, with a staggering five million attendees in 2025, horse racing remains the second-most popular sport in the UK after football.
