Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath has revealed in an open letter that she was a victim of intimate partner abuse and highlighted the challenges she faced amidst a public dispute involving herself, her former partner, and the city.
In the letter shared on Wednesday, Horwath expressed her decision to speak out, stating, “I am tired of being silent. I want every survivor in Hamilton to know there should be no shame in choosing safety, setting boundaries, or telling the truth when ready.”
She disclosed that following criminal harassment charges and a no-contact order, she chose to keep her distance, acknowledging the difficulty in discussing such a painful and frightening experience that many individuals silently endure for extended periods.
CBC Hamilton attempted to contact Horwath’s ex-partner through legal representation but received no response before publication.
The mayor’s letter emerged after a recent decision by the property standards committee concerning a property owned by Horwath, where her ex-partner resides in Hamilton. The city had previously mandated significant repairs at the property on West Street North, with a deadline set for May 1 this year.
The committee ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to consider a late appeal from Horwath regarding the order issued on Jan. 9. The appeal sought an extension until November 2028 to complete the required work.
Expressing disappointment in the committee’s decision in her letter, Horwath affirmed her commitment to resolving the property issues and closing this distressing chapter in her life as the legal owner.
Expert opinions underscore the bravery required for survivors like Horwath to share their experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). Melissa Kimber, a McMaster University expert in IPV, commended Horwath’s courage and emphasized the challenges survivors face in disclosing such experiences amidst concerns of doubt, blame, and stigma.
Horwath’s decision to come forward was met with appreciation from YWCA Hamilton CEO Medora Uppal, who recognized the risks associated with sharing personal stories of abuse, particularly for public figures. High-profile disclosures can shed light on the ongoing impact of abuse even after leaving a relationship and offer support to others who may feel isolated in their experiences.
The mayor’s public acknowledgment of her ordeal aims to encourage compassion, care, and understanding towards survivors and prompt action to address the pervasive issue of intimate partner violence.
