A lone gunman armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a high-profile Washington dinner attended by Donald Trump, as stated by the US president. Chaos ensued at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night when Trump, a previous target of an assassination attempt, was quickly evacuated by secret service agents.
During the incident, one officer was shot but protected by his bulletproof vest and subsequently hospitalized. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, was found carrying a shotgun and handgun. Reports indicate that he was a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel where the event was taking place.
Authorities have charged Allen with assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, and additional charges are expected to be filed. Following the shooting, Trump addressed the media and shared images on his Truth Social platform showing the suspect handcuffed on the ground.
Describing the gunman as a “lone wolf whack job,” Trump commended the swift actions of the secret service in preventing the suspect from breaching the ballroom where he was seated onstage. The president praised the unity displayed by the room during the incident, emphasizing the bravery of the secret service members involved.
Washington mayor Muriel Bowser stated that there is no indication of any other individuals being involved in the incident. Acting attorney general Todd Blanche highlighted the contrast between the cowardly actions of the gunman and the exemplary response of law enforcement, assuring that justice will be served.
Trump announced that the event will be rescheduled within the next 30 days. The Washington Hilton, known for a past attempted presidential assassination on Ronald Reagan in 1981, has since heightened its security measures.
