“Gas Prices Drop in Canada Amid Seasonal Shift”

Date:

Drivers in Canada are in for a pleasant surprise as gas prices take a dip due to the seasonal transition. Earlier this week, the national average price of gas peaked at 194.5 cents per litre but has since decreased by approximately eight cents overnight to 186.9 cents per litre as of Friday.

The fluctuation in gas prices during the year is a common occurrence, with costs typically rising in the summer and falling in the fall. This shift is attributed to the switch from summer-blend gasoline to winter blend around mid-September. The change in fuel composition is necessary to prevent fuel-line freezing and enhance engine performance in colder temperatures, explained Dan McTeague, the president of Canadians for Affordable Energy.

McTeague anticipates that gas prices may decrease by a few more cents over the weekend before stabilizing. However, he noted that unless there is a significant increase in the supply of oil, diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline globally, the current price drop is likely the best consumers can expect.

Recent geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, particularly disruptions in oil transportation routes like the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb Strait, have led to an increase in oil prices. The price of Brent crude oil surpassed $100 per barrel last week and is currently hovering around $104 US.

Conversely, the cost of diesel has seen a sharp increase. The average price per litre of diesel across Canada stood at $2.751 as of Thursday, with variations in different cities such as Calgary at $2.513 and Vancouver exceeding $3 at $3.055 per litre.

The surge in diesel prices is concerning for various industries as diesel-powered vehicles are crucial for transporting goods, including groceries. This spike in fuel costs may ultimately lead to higher prices for consumers as companies are compelled to pass on the increased expenses. Tej Dulat, director of government and public affairs at the Canada Truck Operators Association, highlighted the potential impact on grocery prices due to the rising diesel costs.

In summary, while gas prices are currently on a downward trend in Canada, the situation with diesel prices presents challenges for both industries and consumers. The ongoing fluctuations in fuel costs underscore the intricate relationship between global events and local market dynamics.
