“From DMZ to Beauty Trends: Seoul’s Captivating Charm”

Date:

In a day, I will find myself under a massive tentacle, with two alert eyes peering from a decaying octopus head above me. Following that, three attentive beauticians will be applying a plastic bag connected to a steam hose to my head as part of an innovative 18-step regimen. But before these unique experiences in Seoul, I am exploring the renowned demilitarized zone (DMZ), a top tourist spot in South Korea where all 3,000 daily slots are reserved months ahead.

Travelers flock from the capital to catch a glimpse of North Korea, but photography is strictly prohibited, even from the coach, under the risk of a three-year prison sentence. After passing through military checkpoints, I arrive at the DMZ, where I witness the stark contrast between the two Koreas. North Korea appears isolated and less developed compared to its prosperous southern counterpart.

Observing through binoculars, I spot a large North Korean flag waving above tiny figures on the streets below. Despite past tensions, recent interactions between the two nations have become more subdued. Information exchange is minimal, and there is a shift in public sentiment in South Korea towards reunification, with a declining interest compared to previous years.

While South Korea’s focus shifts from the North, it thrives in cultural exports, spearheaded by global phenomena like Gangnam Style, Parasite, and Squid Game. Riding on this cultural wave, Virgin Atlantic introduces a direct service from London Heathrow to Seoul, catering to the growing interest in South Korean culture.

Seoul’s allure extends beyond pop culture, with skincare emerging as a significant export generating billions of pounds. The city’s beauty industry offers affordable treatments and products, attracting both locals and international visitors. From revitalizing scalp treatments to quirky beauty services like Salmon Sperm Skin, Seoul’s beauty scene is diverse and captivating.

Exploring the vibrant city on foot, I discover Seoul’s unique customs and rules, from its lack of public bins to strict adherence to regulations in places like Bukchon. Amidst the bustling cityscape, hidden gems like Yongma Land, an abandoned theme park, and Cheonggyecheon, a revitalized urban river, offer tranquil respites from the city’s fast-paced energy.

Seoul’s dynamic atmosphere, blending tradition with modernity, captures the essence of a city on the rise. As I immerse myself in its culture and quirks, I find a balance between the city’s lively streets and its serene corners, making my visit to Seoul a memorable and enriching experience.
