Jannik Sinner faced a sudden retirement from his opponent Hugo Gaston during their Australian Open match. Gaston, the French player ranked World No. 93, started the game strongly by earning three break points in the first game against the World No. 2. However, he appeared to struggle physically throughout the match.
During a break, Gaston was seen taking some tablets before returning to the court. Sinner comfortably won the first set 6-2 and continued his dominance by taking the second set 6-1. With Sinner leading 2-0 in sets, Gaston decided to withdraw from the match.
Sinner showed sportsmanship by consoling Gaston, who was visibly emotional. In a post-match interview, Sinner mentioned that he sensed his opponent was not at his best physically.
TNT Sports commentator and former British No. 1 Tim Henman noted that medical staff attended to Gaston during the match, and Gaston ultimately signaled that he couldn’t continue, possibly due to feeling unwell.
Henman also commented on Sinner’s exceptional performance and Gaston’s missed opportunities during the match. Despite the unexpected turn of events, Sinner displayed high-level tennis skills throughout the game.
The match’s conclusion was disappointing for both players. Sinner expressed his happiness to be playing at the Australian Open and thanked the fans for their support.
