“Former Official Criticizes Rushed US Ambassador Appointment”

Date:

The former head of the Foreign Office, Sir Olly Robbins, revealed that pressure from No10 led to a rushed appointment for Peter Mandelson as US ambassador. Robbins criticized the handling of Mandelson’s vetting process, highlighting a lack of consideration.

Robbins defended his actions after accusations from Keir Starmer, stating that there was urgency to finalize Mandelson’s appointment due to prior announcements. He mentioned that there were doubts about the need for vetting Mandelson initially, given his positions in the House of Lords and Privy Council.

Robbins disclosed that he was instructed to find a diplomatic role for Matthew Doyle, the PM’s former spin chief, without informing David Lammy, who was the Foreign Secretary then. This decision later caused controversy when Doyle faced issues related to a sex offender case.

The revelations have intensified pressure on Starmer, who dismissed Robbins following the controversy surrounding Mandelson’s clearance. The PM expressed frustration at being kept in the dark and claimed he would have reconsidered Mandelson’s appointment if fully informed.

Robbins clarified that he did not disclose concerns raised by UK Security Vetting to the PM’s office, contradicting accusations of dishonesty against Starmer. He highlighted the relentless push from No10 for Mandelson’s swift placement in the US.

The former official emphasized the frequent communication with No10 regarding Mandelson’s appointment, emphasizing speed over thoroughness. He admitted to feeling pressured to expedite the process, with a focus on Mandelson’s prompt presence in America.

Robbins faced questions about a reported directive from the PM’s aide to expedite Mandelson’s clearance, to which he acknowledged a dismissive attitude towards the vetting process. He indicated that security officials were hesitant about granting Mandelson high-level clearance.

Regarding Doyle, Robbins mentioned being directed to conceal efforts to secure a high-level role for him, further complicating the situation. Doyle denied seeking such a position and emphasized his intention to remain in UK politics post his tenure at No10.

The controversy surrounding Mandelson and Doyle has sparked criticism of a select group within the political sphere. The Government initiated a leak inquiry following reports on the Mandelson vetting issue, aiming to address potential breaches of national security.

Despite the ongoing turmoil, Starmer focused on chairing a meeting to address the impact of the Iran war on Britain. The Government emphasized diplomatic efforts to mitigate repercussions and ensure stability in the region post-conflict, highlighting the importance of safeguarding British interests.
