A father and son have been embarking on a global cycling journey for 400 days, traversing over 25 countries. Among the challenging hill climbs, one particular destination has left a lasting impression on them.
George, aged 57, and his 23-year-old son, Josh Kohler, hailing from Norfolk, have been on an extraordinary worldwide cycling expedition for more than a year. Under their mission titled ‘Pedal the Planet’, they have explored some of the most breathtaking locations across the world, pedaling through diverse landscapes ranging from barren deserts to rugged mountains and terraced rice fields.
Commencing their journey from Norfolk on March 29 last year, the duo has covered thousands of miles, expected to total 30,000 kilometers upon completion. They have also fundraised over £30,000 for charity. By the end of their remarkable venture next month, George and Josh will have spent close to 400 days cycling around the globe, conquering a staggering 180,000 meters of elevation – equivalent to scaling 20 Mount Everests!
On their path to securing three Guinness World Records titles for ‘Fastest father and son to circumnavigate the world on bicycles’, ‘Furthest distance cycled by a father and son’, and ‘Most countries cycled through by a father and son’, George and Josh recently shared their exclusive insights with The Mirror after wrapping up their South America leg.
Reflecting on their travels, the father-and-son team identified China as their most cherished destination during the extensive expedition. Josh, a videographer and content creator, expressed their deep connection with China, citing its unexpected cultural richness, gastronomy, and friendly locals as standout features.
George elaborated on their memorable experiences in China, highlighting moments like walking along the Great Wall’s western side and witnessing the vast Hani rice terraces, likening the scenery to a rice-based Grand Canyon.
Despite their enriching journey, the pair faced numerous challenges, including battling headwinds, scorching temperatures, demanding terrains, and isolated routes. Brazil emerged as the most daunting country due to its exceedingly hilly landscapes, according to both cyclists.
As they near the end of their global expedition, Josh and George are pedaling through Portugal, Spain, and France, aiming to conclude their adventure in Norfolk on May 2. The duo, now on the brink of setting three Guinness World Records, look back on their transformative journey with mixed emotions, acknowledging the significant impact it has had on their relationship and personal growth.
Aside from their personal accomplishments, Josh and George have raised substantial funds for UNICEF and Bicycle Links, a Norwich-based bike company supporting underprivileged individuals with refurbished bikes and mental health assistance. Followers can stay updated on their journey through their social media accounts or contribute to their fundraising efforts on JustGiving.
