A toddler fell down an elevator shaft in Voronezh, Russia, as his parents looked on in horror. The boy’s father quickly jumped in after him to prevent the elevator from descending and crushing them. The incident occurred on the ground floor of their apartment building when the child unexpectedly dropped 6ft into the darkness, narrowly missing metal spikes at the bottom of the shaft.
The mother used a flashlight to help the father locate the boy, while heroic neighbors intervened by holding the lift on the third floor to prevent further descent. After rescuing the child, the father mentioned that they rushed to the hospital, but thankfully, the toddler only suffered minor bruises and was unharmed.
Expressing relief, the father stated, “We were fortunate that the neighbors responded quickly and prevented a tragedy.” He also mentioned concerns about the poor condition of the new building’s lifts, emphasizing the need for safer operations. The child has since returned home and is reported to have calmed down.
Following the incident, the Russian Investigative Committee initiated a criminal investigation into the matter. The father criticized the elevator’s maintenance, highlighting its sporadic functionality and alarming noises when in operation.
