The M62 motorway was shut down today following a tragic incident where a man in his thirties lost his life after the car he was driving crashed into a barrier during a pursuit by West Yorkshire Police.
The police were engaged in a chase with a black Mercedes on the motorway around 12:52 am after the vehicle refused to stop. The fatal collision occurred when the car tried to exit at a slip road and collided with a barrier.
The driver, a man in his thirties who was the only person in the car, passed away at the scene. Due to the severity of the crash, the road has been closed, and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.
West Yorkshire Police have confirmed the closure of the eastbound section of the M62 following the tragic incident during the police pursuit. The police stated, “At approximately 12:52 am, a black Mercedes C220 failed to comply with police instructions on the M62 eastbound, leading to a pursuit. Shortly after, the vehicle crashed into barriers while attempting to exit at junction 29. The driver, a man in his thirties, was the sole occupant and sadly passed away at the scene. His family has been notified and will receive specialized support.”
The closure affects the M62 eastbound from Junction 28 in Tingley to Junction 29 in Lofthouse due to a single-vehicle collision. Additionally, the northbound exit at Lofthouse on the M1 Junction 42 is also closed. West Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and Traffic Officers are present at the scene, managing the situation.
