Expert Pilot Shares Tips to Manage Fear of Turbulence

Date:

Fear of flying is a common issue, with about 40% of individuals expressing anxiety about air travel. Turbulence is a significant factor contributing to this fear, as many passengers find the sensation unsettling. To alleviate concerns, an experienced pilot has shared insights on managing nerves during flights.

Turbulence is a normal occurrence during both short and long-haul flights, typically caused by the aircraft encountering air movements. Although turbulence is likened to driving on a bumpy road or navigating choppy waters, it can still provoke anxiety among passengers, especially when visibility is limited. Pilot Tom Copestake, with extensive experience flying for Wizz Air, empathizes with nervous flyers and offers valuable advice.

Tom explains that turbulence results from different air pockets colliding, similar to the meeting of water bodies like a stream and a river. While turbulence can be challenging to predict, pilots utilize systems to anticipate and communicate areas of turbulence to avoid discomfort for passengers. Tom recommends sitting in the middle of the plane to minimize the effects of turbulence, as the aircraft pivots around this central point.

Acknowledging the discomfort turbulence may cause, Tom reassures travelers that pilots are adept at handling such situations, emphasizing the safety of the aircraft. Turbulence is not limited to cruising altitude but can also occur during takeoff and landing due to factors like airport layouts and ground temperatures. Thermal turbulence, generated by ground heat release, can lead to bumpy landings, particularly in warmer weather or coastal areas.

When booking a flight, passengers can consider seat placement to potentially reduce turbulence effects and should remain calm if encountering a bumpy landing, as it is often a normal part of flight conditions. Trusting in the expertise of pilots is key to feeling secure during air travel.
