Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with a common issue when trying to access the web. Online congestion is a significant problem that often impacts households during the evening hours. This is when many people are online simultaneously, engaging in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video calling friends.
Typically, internet speeds remain fast and reliable during working hours when fewer individuals are using the network at home. However, in the evening, as more households go online after work, local networks can become overloaded, leading to a noticeable slowdown in speeds.
To illustrate, broadband operates similarly to a motorway – the more users on it simultaneously, the slower the connection becomes. Hence, many households experience a decline in performance between 7 pm and 11 pm.
A recent study by Broadband Genie has unveiled the UK areas most impacted by slowdowns during peak hours, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top of the list. According to the report, users in this area see average download speeds drop from 167Mbps during off-peak times to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decrease.
Other regions heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
The report also highlighted regional variations across the UK, with Scotland leading in overall broadband performance improvements during the evening. Conversely, the South West experienced a roughly 15% decrease in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Broadband experts suggest ways for households to enhance their home connections, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstacles to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
