Europe has received a strong caution to safeguard its airspace in light of increasing threats that an EU official labeled as “hybrid warfare.”
Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the EU Commission, emphasized the need for Europe to address the recent airspace violations, stating, “The recent intrusions in our skies are part of a growing threat pattern. It is essential to acknowledge it for what it is – hybrid warfare. Europe must enhance its capabilities to defend and secure our airspace.” She stressed the importance of unity in response to Russia’s attempts to create division.
Recent weeks have seen Europe on high alert following multiple suspected incidents of Russian drones breaching European airspace. The incursions began with around twenty UAVs flying into Poland and have been observed in several other northern European countries, including Germany, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands.
Despite consistent denials from Moscow, French authorities detained a Russian shadow fleet tanker off the western coast amid allegations that disruptive drones were being launched from it. Russian President Putin dismissed the seizure as a distraction tactic from France’s internal issues.
Von der Leyen emphasized that countering Russia’s hybrid warfare requires a shift in mindset and unity among European nations. She stated, “Dealing with Russia’s hybrid warfare goes beyond conventional defense. It demands a collective approach focused on unity, deterrence, and determination.”
