AI is increasingly shaping our daily lives, posing challenges for parents to keep pace with the rapid changes. Families are now tasked with guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to schoolwork and friendships, as showcased during the recent Safer Internet Day.
In the year 2026, we have collaborated with Tesco Mobile, a key supporter of Safer Internet Day, to promote open communication within families through The Family Chat initiative. This initiative aims to facilitate transparent discussions at home about smartphones and online safety, making the daunting task more approachable for all.
Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, with her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter. The inaugural family dialogue will focus on AI and the importance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub in assisting parents with children of various age groups up to 18.
Similar to many families, the Karleys – consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, Anna and Emmanuel confess their lack of expertise in identifying AI, which can be a drawback in ensuring online safety.
“Spotting AI is not my forte,” admits Anna. “There have been instances where I’ve mistaken AI for real content, only for my kids to point out the truth.”
The challenge of distinguishing authentic content from fake is prevalent even within the Karley family. Joshua remarks, “Platforms like TikTok are filled with AI-generated content that appears incredibly realistic.”
With most school assignments now completed online, often utilizing AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are tackling this aspect as well. “I’ve observed a shift towards computer-based homework, especially with my eldest in secondary school,” notes Giovanna. “As parents, our focus should be on evaluating the usage of AI for homework, rather than completely denouncing its utility.”
To ensure safe AI use by children, here are some guiding principles:
1. **Explore AI Together**: Engage in collaborative AI activities like storytelling or artwork creation to discover its capabilities as a family.
2. **AI Isn’t Always Right**: Encourage children to fact-check AI responses and question the source of information.
3. **Check Age Restrictions & Privacy Settings**: Stick to age-appropriate platforms, and review privacy configurations together for a secure online experience.
4. **Discuss Reality**: Initiate conversations about differentiating between real and manipulated online content to instill digital literacy.
5. **AI as a Tool, Not a Substitute**: Encourage creativity and problem-solving alongside AI usage to foster critical thinking skills.
Anna and Emmanuel appreciate having a reliable resource for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers user-friendly materials and toolkits to aid parents in discussing AI with their children. The hub includes tailored advice on discussing safe AI usage with kids, developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre. Additionally, it provides engaging AI quizzes for the whole family to participate in and discuss.
While the Karley family already prioritizes online safety discussions, they find Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to be a valuable asset in enhancing their support mechanisms. “Exploring this resource together has enabled us to deepen our understanding and better assist our children,” Emmanuel remarks.
