“Deadly Chytrid Disease Threatens Amphibians Globally”

Date:

A deadly fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis is threatening amphibian populations worldwide. The disease manifests in frogs and toads through symptoms like thickening skin, difficulty breathing, and weakened immune systems. Despite not being officially detected in Manitoba, Canada, the presence of the pathogen is deemed inevitable due to its widespread occurrence on the continent.

Chytrid, caused by the fungal pathogens Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in frogs and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans in salamanders, has led to the extinction of numerous amphibian species globally. While the latter pathogen originated in East Asia and devastated salamander populations in parts of Europe, it has not yet crossed over to North America.

Although chytrid has been linked to the extinction of over 90 species and a decline in more than 500 others, efforts to combat the disease have been hindered by its rapid spread. The disease has been described as one of the most devastating infectious diseases among vertebrates and has gained a foothold in the U.S. and Canada in recent years.

In Canada, nearly half of Alberta’s frog populations tested positive for chytrid, with similar findings in British Columbia affecting one in ten amphibians, particularly northern leopard frogs. This species, classified as endangered in Western Canada and of special concern in Manitoba, has experienced population declines attributed to chytrid.

While chytrid has been confirmed in frogs in neighboring provinces and territories, Manitoba remains chytrid-free officially. However, researchers suspect that the disease may be more widespread than currently acknowledged, calling for proactive monitoring and conservation efforts to protect amphibian populations from potential devastation.
