A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has resulted in the death of at least 20 individuals and left approximately 300 others wounded in Afghanistan.
The earthquake occurred at 12:59 am local time, about 14 miles west-southwest of Khulm. The US Geological Survey issued a warning stating that there is a high likelihood of significant casualties and widespread devastation due to the seismic activity at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).
Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, reported that 20 people lost their lives, and 320 others sustained injuries. Most of the injured individuals had minor wounds and were discharged after receiving medical attention.
Rescue operations have been initiated in the affected regions, particularly in Balkh and Samangan provinces, where extensive damage is reported. Emergency teams are aiding in the relocation of the injured individuals, while affected households are being provided with assistance.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government’s chief spokesperson, mentioned that the earthquake impacted the Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan areas. Government crews have been deployed to offer assistance to those in need.
The renowned Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif suffered damage, with footage circulating online showing fallen bricks from its walls while the structure remained mostly intact.
The Afghanistan Defense Ministry informed that a rockslide blocked a mountain highway connecting Kabul to Mazar-e-Sharif temporarily. However, the road was cleared later, and individuals who were injured or trapped along the route were rescued and taken to hospitals.
This disaster follows a recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. The United Nations swiftly provided urgent aid to the affected communities on the ground, pledging ongoing support.
