Ukrainian authorities investigating officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office were announced by anti-corruption agencies on Wednesday. This comes after the country’s recently dismissed defence minister called for national elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia. The probe targets a criminal organization allegedly led by a current and former lawmaker, with involvement from senior presidential office officials. President Zelenskyy took action by dismissing Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office. This investigation poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s leadership following previous political turmoil. The appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defence minister was approved by Ukraine’s parliament. Zelenskyy nominated Khmara after the removal of Mykhailo Fedorov in July.
Fedorov, in a video message posted online, called for elections in Ukraine, highlighting governance issues and corruption that have weakened the country’s ability to combat the war. Zelenskyy’s office has not responded to Fedorov’s call for elections. The ongoing political upheaval follows recent military successes in Ukraine using drone technology to target Russian assets and disrupt operations.
Despite these achievements, Ukraine still faces challenges in peace efforts and defense capabilities. Recent drone strikes on Russian oil facilities and warehouses have been notable, but Ukraine lacks necessary resources like U.S.-made Patriot interceptors due to limited global supplies. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, with both sides engaging in military actions, including drone attacks and air defense interception.
