Donald Trump’s current presidential term is set to conclude in January 2029, but concerns have been raised by journalist Michael Wolff about the possibility of Trump extending his stay in power. Despite the constitutional limitation on presidents serving more than two terms, Trump, at 79 years old, has hinted at a potential re-election bid, as indicated by the emergence of ‘Trump 2028’ merchandise. In an interview with NBC, Trump cryptically mentioned the existence of methods that could facilitate his re-election, citing significant support from his followers.
Wolff, in a podcast episode on The Daily Beast, suggested that Trump could maintain influence through his children, particularly focusing on Donald Trump Jr. He emphasized the close relationship between Trump and his eldest son, describing Donald Jr. as a loyal supporter throughout his father’s endeavors.
While other Trump siblings like Ivanka and Tiffany appear to have distanced themselves from political aspirations, Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, expressed openness to the idea of running for office in the future. These discussions come amidst Trump’s ongoing confrontations with Iran, leading to strained relationships with NATO allies and global repercussions such as fuel shortages and rising oil prices.
Wolff speculated that Trump would seek to wield power even after leaving office, possibly through maintaining ties with the Republican Party. By leveraging his influence, he could continue to shape the party’s direction and policies, ensuring his legacy endures beyond his presidency. However, Wolff cautioned that Trump’s satisfaction in retirement would be jeopardized if another Republican figure were to take his place within the party hierarchy.
