A charming village in the Cotswolds has gained global recognition for its enchanting appeal and renowned cottages.
Featuring golden-hued architecture, rolling hills of countryside, and idyllic villages, the Cotswolds offer some of the most stunning landscapes in the country. Many of its towns have received prestigious accolades for their quintessentially English allure.
Among these is Bibury, a village nestled in Gloucestershire at the heart of the Cotswolds. Known for its ancient honey-colored stone buildings, meandering River Coln, and Rack Isle water meadow, Bibury is just a short drive from Cirencester, known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds.’
Bibury has captured global attention, being named the most beautiful village in the world by Forbes last September and previously recognized as one of the world’s most picturesque villages. English designer and poet William Morris hailed Bibury as ‘the most beautiful village in England.’
Despite being one of the smaller destinations in the Cotswolds, Bibury draws thousands of visitors annually. Its iconic Arlington Row, a line of cottages dating back to the 14th century, is one of the most photographed streets. Originally a wool store, these cottages were converted into weavers’ homes in the 17th century.
Arlington Row is Bibury’s main attraction and a hotspot for photography enthusiasts, although some houses display signs politely requesting no photos due to the influx of tourists. Nevertheless, Bibury’s beauty shines through with the picturesque River Coln, lush green spaces, streams, and charming establishments.
Visitors can also explore the Bibury Trout Farm, offering fishing, crazy golf, and refreshments at the café, or indulge in sweet treats at Kelly’s Ice cream. The village boasts cozy spots like The Twig café for coffee and cake before strolling along the surrounding paths and walking routes.
For accommodations, options in Bibury include holiday rentals like Sackville House, The Bothy, and Sundial Cottage, as well as the four-star The Swan Hotel. Despite limited activities, Bibury’s serene ambiance, tranquil river walks, and scenic backdrop of stone cottages make it a worthwhile stop for visitors.
