Canada’s inflation rate remained steady at three percent in August, according to the latest report from Statistics Canada. The stability was attributed to a slight decrease in gasoline and food prices, offset by an increase in costs related to tours and travel. Shelter expenses, including rents and mortgage payments, also saw a slight uptick during the same period.
In August, consumer prices experienced a marginal 0.1 percent decline. This aligns with expectations from a recent Reuters poll of economists, predicting a consistent three percent annual inflation rate. However, the data released on Monday does not reflect the recent surge in crude oil prices due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Notably, the average price of regular grade gasoline across Canada has risen by approximately 21 percent year-over-year as of the latest data. Economists like Benjamin Reitzes from the Bank of Montreal anticipate that this spike in gas prices will likely lead to increased inflation in September.
Despite the rise in energy costs, RBC economist Abbey Xu noted that the impact on overall consumer prices remains limited. While certain energy-intensive categories such as air travel have shown significant price growth, it has not significantly affected the broader consumer market. Xu warned that prolonged high oil prices could pose a risk of increased cost pass-through to other sectors.
Analyzing the August data, Reitzes highlighted a 0.2 percent decrease in food prices, driven by lower prices for fresh produce. However, he cautioned that the expected rise in fuel costs may counterbalance this trend and lead to higher grocery prices in the upcoming months.
Both Reitzes and Xu believe that the latest figures from Statistics Canada support their view that the Bank of Canada will maintain its current interest rates in the near term. Reitzes emphasized that the data does not suggest any immediate rate hikes, especially with concerns over the escalating oil prices.
