“Butlin’s Innovation Chief Unveils £2.5M Skypark Sensation”

Date:

Heidi Watson, the head of innovation at Butlin’s, found herself in a unique position in 2021 with the opportunity to create a new playpark project during the coronavirus pandemic. The result was the Skypark in Skegness, costing £2.5 million, making it the second-most expensive playground in the UK and one of the most ambitious projects in the country.

The Skypark was part of Butlin’s ‘resort of the future’ initiative, aiming to provide a captivating experience for visitors day and night. Heidi’s vision included a 14m tall playpark tower and drew inspiration from renowned playparks globally, such as a cloudlike design in Istanbul that changes colors at night using dichroic film.

A key focus of the Skypark was to ensure inclusivity for all generations and abilities, featuring wheelchair-accessible equipment rarely found in other playparks. The central tower was designed to increase the risk level as visitors ascend, challenging them to push their limits with each visit.

Heidi’s research into world-class playparks influenced her creations not only in Skegness but also in Minehead. Notable examples she explored included a stunning playpark in Sydney with interactive illuminated swing installations and a Moscow adventure playpark spanning 1.8 hectares, offering themed zones for all ages.

Other unique playgrounds she examined included an outdoor playground in Singapore boasting the longest slide in the city and an imaginative playpark in Istanbul with color-changing cloud structures. Heidi’s innovative approach was further inspired by attractions like a thrilling water slide in Chicago and a tech-infused playground created for the Galaxy S10 release.

One standout feature that caught Heidi’s attention was The Black Hole, a high-tech indoor waterslide known for its immersive LED light shows, providing riders with a psychedelic, time-travel-like experience. Through her extensive research and creative vision, Heidi aimed to elevate the playpark experience for Butlin’s visitors, setting new standards for fun and adventure.
