“Germany Blames Russia for Drone Attack at Airport”

Date:

The German government has attributed an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month to Russia, involving a drone carrying explosives. As a response, Germany will close a Russian consulate and take other actions against Moscow. The drone, discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft on Aug. 4, was defused, raising concerns about heightened danger.

German officials believe Moscow is conducting a campaign of sabotage and disruption across Europe to undermine support for Ukraine and destabilize European nations. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that elements found in the drone’s configuration and explosives are consistent with Russian hybrid operations against Ukraine. He noted a high level of technical expertise in the device’s design but suggested that the execution may have involved lower-level agents.

Authorities suspect individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities were involved in the attempted attack. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the deliberate damage caused to bilateral relations by the attack in Leipzig, leading to the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.

Germany plans to propose adding more Russian individuals to EU sanctions lists in response to hybrid attacks. The country will also enhance entry controls for Russian nationals and increase pressure on the “shadow fleet,” suspected of violating international sanctions by shipping Russian oil. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova rejected claims of Russian involvement in the drone attack, calling them a pretext for escalating tensions. Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the allegations, suggesting they were fabricated to divert attention from internal issues.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is a crucial hub for international freight and supporting Ukraine. It houses NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution, facilitating equipment delivery to NATO battle groups. The airport has previously been targeted in suspected Russian intelligence plots.

Around 200 incidents in Europe since Ukraine’s invasion in 2022 have been attributed to Russian sabotage and malign activities. The EU has imposed numerous sanctions on Russia, with Western allies expressing solidarity with Germany following the Leipzig attack.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned of ongoing sabotage by Russia against NATO countries, with recent incidents reported in Poland. Investigations are underway into suspected foreign intelligence activities targeting Polish facilities.
