“Eastend Scenic Rail Tours: A Dream Come True”

Date:

Gary Southgate’s dream has come to life with the launch of the Eastend Scenic Rail Tours in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley. The journey, which takes passengers through picturesque riverbanks and eroded badlands, marks the realization of Southgate’s long-standing vision.

A passionate farmer from North Battleford, Sask., Southgate has been meticulously collecting old trains since 2013. His aspiration wasn’t just to own these historical locomotives but to put them back into service and share the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets.”

Southgate’s fascination with trains dates back to his childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by in Biggar to North Battleford. His collection began with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, later transitioning to Canadian National (CN) equipment to recreate the ambiance of the old Super Continental passenger trains.

Having amassed a sizable number of rail cars, Southgate aims to restore them for operational use or potentially as part of a museum. Notably, two of his cars featured in the Polar Express films, and he acquired the Cape Tormentime rail car previously used by Eleanor Roosevelt during a Canadian trip.

Despite facing challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate persevered in bringing his tour to fruition while managing his farming duties 360 kilometers away. His dedication and commitment to preserving railway heritage have garnered widespread interest and support from enthusiasts and locals alike.

Eastend Scenic Rail Tours has successfully completed several trips this year, with more scheduled, including a sold-out ride. Visitors from various parts of Canada and even international guests have flocked to experience the unique journey offered by Southgate’s tour.

Looking ahead, Southgate envisions expanding the tour experience by developing amenities such as an RV park, a museum showcasing old train equipment, and a maintenance facility for winter operations. Despite the challenges, Southgate remains optimistic about the future of his venture, hoping to leave a lasting legacy that will continue to captivate visitors and preserve history for generations to come.
