Hilary Swank, at the age of 52, has revealed that she is expecting her third child. The renowned actress, known for her role in “Yellowjackets,” addressed critics who question older women having children while men are not similarly scrutinized. She highlighted this disparity in a segment from “The Drew Barrymore Show” shared on her Instagram stories.
Swank, a two-time Oscar winner, already has two children with her husband, Philip Schneider. She previously froze her eggs at 37 and welcomed twins, Aya and Ohm, in 2023 at the age of 48. The pregnancy announcement was made in a playful Instagram video where the family danced with glow sticks, revealing a tiny glow-stick figure on Swank’s belly, hinting at a December due date.
In a clip shared on Thursday, Swank discussed the criticism older parents face about potentially not being there for their children in later years. She emphasized the unique bond between parent and child, emphasizing the importance of experiencing that relationship despite any future uncertainties.
Late pregnancies, defined as those occurring past the age of 35, are becoming more prevalent in North America. Statistics show a rise in the number of older mothers giving birth in recent years. While advancements in fertility treatments like egg-freezing have extended the window for starting a family, there are still risks associated with pregnancies at an advanced maternal age.
Notable figures like Janet Jackson, Naomi Campbell, and Brigitte Nielsen have also welcomed children in their 50s. The use of technologies such as egg-freezing and IVF has made it possible for women to conceive later in life, though it comes at a significant cost.
Swank’s decision to have children later in life reflects a growing trend of delayed parenthood, with more individuals opting to start families at an older age. Despite the risks involved, advancements in reproductive medicine have provided new opportunities for individuals to pursue parenthood on their own timeline.
