Blue Jays to Induct Buck Martinez into Hall of Excellence

Date:

The Toronto Blue Jays will honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after covering over 4,000 games, dedicated nearly forty years to the Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude on CBC Radio’s Metro Morning, Martinez acknowledged the fans for embracing him and making him feel like family over the years. Renowned for his distinctive broadcasting style and American accent, Martinez’s iconic phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball” became fan favorites. He credited his return to Toronto in 2010 as a play-by-play announcer and his time in Milwaukee for inspiring these catchphrases.

Transitioning into retirement, Martinez reflected on his long career in baseball and broadcasting. His decision to step away due to health concerns, stemming from a second battle with cancer in 2025 (initially diagnosed in 2022), led him to retire earlier this year. However, he happily shared that he is now cancer-free and doing well.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will showcase a collection honoring key figures who shaped the Blue Jays franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Notably, all eleven current members on the team’s Level of Excellence will be featured, such as Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.

Martinez, who joined the Blue Jays in 1981 after stints with the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers, initially felt apprehensive about coming to Toronto. However, he soon realized the city’s passion for baseball and the team, leading him to appreciate the unique culture and support.

Reflecting on past baseball seasons, Martinez highlighted the excitement of last year’s World Series, particularly praising the memorable Game 7 and the team dynamics. As he reminisced, Martinez shared his admiration for players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., acknowledging the challenges even top athletes face in the game.

Martinez’s journey from player to broadcaster and his enduring impact on the Blue Jays make his induction into the Hall of Excellence a fitting tribute to his lasting contributions to the team and the sport.
