Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to recent disparaging comments from U.S. cabinet members regarding Canada and its military, calling the remarks inappropriate and urging a more serious approach to trade negotiations. Carney made these statements following remarks by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy, criticizing Canada’s navy and military capabilities.
Carney emphasized that the derogatory comments were unproductive and urged the U.S. officials to refrain from such behavior and engage in meaningful discussions. He highlighted the importance of respectful dialogue and expressed willingness to engage in constructive negotiations.
Trade talks between Canada and the U.S. broke down recently, leading to a series of insults and social media provocations from the U.S. side. The rhetoric escalated with mocking comments and derogatory online posts directed at Canada and its military personnel.
In response, Canadian officials, including Defence Minister David McGuinty and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, expressed strong disapproval of the disrespectful comments. McGuinty criticized the remarks made by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, while Ford and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew pushed back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions.
Carney highlighted that the U.S. demands during the trade talks were unreasonable and posed threats to key Canadian industries and cultural values. He reiterated Canada’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and promoting its cultural heritage, emphasizing the need for a fair and mutually beneficial trade agreement.
Following the breakdown of negotiations, both countries imposed tariffs on each other’s exports, escalating the trade dispute. Carney announced that Canada would match the U.S. tariffs, signaling a firm stance in response to the trade tensions.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue with the U.S. while safeguarding Canada’s critical industries. He underlined Canada’s position on key sectors and expressed determination to protect national interests during trade discussions.
The ongoing discussions between Canadian and U.S. officials at the G20 finance ministers’ meeting aim to address the trade disputes and seek a resolution that respects both countries’ interests. Carney and Champagne have emphasized the need for respectful negotiations and finding common ground to resolve the trade disagreements.
