Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Shane Bieber has been placed on the 15-day injured list, dealing a significant blow to the team’s playoff aspirations as they vie for a wild-card spot in the closing stages of the season. Bieber, an experienced starter, is sidelined due to inflammation in his teres major muscle located beneath his right shoulder. The move to the injured list was made retroactively from the day after his strong performance in a recent game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed that Bieber experienced discomfort during a bullpen session in New York, prompting an MRI scan that diagnosed a moderate to mild teres major injury. Bieber, a former American League Cy Young Award winner, holds a season record of 5-2 with a 4.37 ERA. He had previously faced a stint on the injured list earlier in the season due to elbow inflammation and forearm fatigue.
Schneider expressed hope for Bieber’s return within the season but refrained from providing a specific timeline. With the Blue Jays standing at 64-68, just two games behind an AL wild-card position, the timing of Bieber’s injury is particularly challenging. Schneider acknowledged the team’s need to adapt to the setback and navigate the remaining games of the season without their star pitcher.
