“Crazy Rich Asians” Returns as HBO Series in 2027

Date:

After eight years since the success of “Crazy Rich Asians” at the box office, the iconic story is making a return to screens as an HBO series. The upcoming eight-episode, one-hour drama will continue the narrative from the 2018 film. Returning to reprise their roles as series regulars are Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh making a comeback as a recurring character. Production is scheduled to commence in 2027.

Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s popular novels, the series will be spearheaded by Adele Lim, the co-writer of the film. Joining Lim, the original film’s director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will return as executive producers. The show will be co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

“This series marks the long-awaited sequel,” Lim expressed in a statement, emphasizing that the eight episodes will delve into the characters and settings of the story. However, specific storylines from the books that will be incorporated have not been disclosed yet.

The plot of the original movie revolves around Rachel (portrayed by Wu), a New York economics professor who embarks on a journey to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick (played by Golding), only to discover his affiliation with one of the wealthiest families in the country. Yeoh portrays Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor, while Chieng takes on the role of his cousin Eddie.

The announcement finally provides answers to fans eagerly waiting for the continuation of Rachel and Nick’s story post the film release. Director Jon M. Chu, in a statement, humorously responded to the sequel anticipation by quoting Awkwafina’s character, Goh Peik Lin, “Well, bok bok b—h, we’re back.”

For Toronto-based entertainment blogger Will Wong, the news signifies a reunion with old friends as he reminisces attending the film’s premiere in 2018 and following the cast and narrative since then. “Crazy Rich Asians” was a groundbreaking movie upon its release, boasting an all-Asian cast, a rarity in major Hollywood films since “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993.

The romantic comedy, produced with a reported budget of $30 million US, grossed over $239 million US, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy in nearly a decade at the North American box office, as per HBO reports. Wong, proudly embracing his Asian heritage, appreciates the unique perspective on the Asian American experience depicted in the 2018 film.

The success of “Crazy Rich Asians” came amidst a growing demand for better representation of Asian characters and narratives in Hollywood. Wong believes that the series has the potential to build on this triumph and deepen the audience’s connection with the characters. He expresses hope for more inclusion of characters like Awkwafina and Gemma Chan’s Astrid, although their casting remains unconfirmed.

The television format could provide an extended platform for the story to unfold further, given that Kwan’s book series started with “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2013, followed by “China Rich Girlfriend” in 2015 and “Rich People Problems” in 2017. Kwan expressed his excitement about the characters returning in a series, calling it a dream come true and acknowledging the fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

Wong anticipates that the show will pave the way for more opportunities for Asian talents in the industry. He emphasizes the importance of providing avenues for writers, directors, actors, and other creatives to showcase their skills and stories. Despite existing barriers, Wong is optimistic about the future, confident that the series will be a tremendous success.
