“Meta to Implement Changes for Youth Safety”

Date:

Meta, the parent company of social media platforms Instagram and Facebook, has agreed to implement changes for young users following a settlement to address online harms to youth. The settlement, valued at up to $18 billion US over the next decade, resolves claims from various U.S. states and territories. This settlement is considered one of the largest in consumer protection history outside of the Big Tobacco settlements of the 1990s.

The adjustments for users under 18 include time limits, blackout periods, more control over feeds, limits to social comparison features, and enhanced age verification. Meta has committed to maintaining existing safety measures and improving parental controls. They also plan to strengthen these measures further if other social platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube adopt similar changes.

While these changes primarily affect the U.S. market initially, experts suggest they may eventually extend globally due to concerns about the negative impact of social media on youth in various countries. Despite the positive direction of the settlement, some experts believe that more safety concerns need to be addressed by social media companies, emphasizing the addictive nature of their platforms.

The settlement with Meta could influence future regulatory efforts, both in Canada and internationally. It might prompt Meta to settle other pending lawsuits and proactively address regulatory issues. Efforts like these could align with Canada’s proposed online safety legislation, although there is still room for regulatory improvements.

Meta’s swift resolution of social media issues is seen as a strategic move to shift focus towards artificial intelligence developments. They aim to move past the current controversies and concentrate on advancing AI technologies, leveraging their global user base for future growth opportunities.
