At the Montreal Elite16 tournament, Canadian beach volleyball players Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson clinched the bronze medal in front of their home crowd.
The duo, who won silver at the 2024 Olympics, staged a remarkable comeback against Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann, triumphing with scores of 20-22, 21-12, and 18-16 to secure a spot on the podium.
Wilkerson’s stellar performance included 32 attack points, 5 block points, and a serve point, while Humana-Paredes contributed with 9 attack points.
The match faced a temporary halt due to adverse weather conditions before it resumed.
Earlier in the day, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson suffered a 21-19, 20-22, 15-7 defeat against Brazil’s Thamela Galil and Victoria Tosta in the semifinals.
Although their quest for a three-peat ended, the Canadians were set to vie for the bronze medal against Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann later in the day.
Notably, Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson had previously clinched the Montreal titles in 2023 and 2025, sandwiching their Olympic silver medal from the Paris Games.
Canadian men secure bronze
In the men’s bronze-medal match, Canada’s Sam Schachter and Jonathan Pickett mounted a comeback to claim victory against Norway’s Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen.
The Ontario duo bounced back after dropping the opening set 16-21, rallying to win the next two sets 28-26 and 15-12, marking their first podium finish together on home turf.
Schachter and Pickett caused a major upset by defeating world No. 1s Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson to advance to the men’s semifinals at the FIVB Beach Pro Tour event on Saturday.
Despite their commendable run, the 39th-ranked Canadians fell short in the semifinals on Sunday morning, succumbing to a 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 16-14) defeat against Brazil’s Renato Andrew Lima de Carvalho and André Loyola Stein.
