Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw competitions at the latest Diamond League event held in Chorzow, Poland.
Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, securing her win. She is the current titleholder of the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games championships. DeAnna Price from the United States claimed second place with a throw of 75.23 meters, while Italy’s Sara Fantini settled for third with a distance of 71.95 meters.
Continuing the Canadian dominance in hammer throwing, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., secured the top spot in the men’s event with a best throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg now holds the titles of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. Germany’s Merlin Hummel took second place with a throw of 81.25 meters, followed by Hungary’s Bence Halász in third with 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland, clocking in at 9.96 seconds. Oblique Seville from Jamaica clinched the victory in a record-setting time of 9.83 seconds, with Kenny Bednarek from the United States securing second place in 9.87 seconds. Christian Coleman, the former world champion, claimed third place with a time of 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m event saw American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden triumph with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia finished second with a time of 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist, settled for third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
In a surprise victory, American Ethan Strand won the men’s 1,500m race, setting a season-best time of 3:30.77. Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech from Kenya secured second place with a time of 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third place with a time of 3:31.16. Notably, Norwegian distance-running star Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished fourth after recently recovering from Achilles surgery.
The upcoming and final Diamond League meeting of the season is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, leading up to the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The global track and field season will conclude with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship from September 11 to 13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw, while Rogers, despite her similar titles, will not participate due to the absence of the women’s hammer throw event in the championship program.
