The renowned calypso music pioneer known as The Mighty Sparrow has passed away at the age of 91. Born Slinger Francisco, he peacefully departed in New York, surrounded by his loved ones. His family confirmed the news in a statement, mentioning his significant contributions as a singer, songwriter, and mentor.

Hailing from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco relocated to Trinidad and Tobago at a young age and rose to fame in the calypso music scene. Celebrated for hits like “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” and “Congo Man,” he became an icon in the industry, spreading the culture and stories of the Caribbean worldwide.

Praised by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, Francisco received numerous national accolades and was granted an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of the West Indies in 1987. His influence extended beyond his homeland, with leaders from various Caribbean nations paying tribute to his legacy.

The Mighty Sparrow’s vast repertoire of songs, ranging from festive carnival tunes to politically charged pieces like “Model Nation” and “Martin Luther King For President,” showcased his versatility and impact. His performance at events such as the Caribana festival in Toronto and appearances at prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden solidified his status as a musical legend.

Having recorded hundreds of tracks over a career spanning six decades, The Mighty Sparrow’s dedication to advancing the art of calypso music left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. As Trinidadian cultural historian Rudolph Ottley noted, he was not just an entertainer but a trailblazer and one of the most esteemed calypsonians globally.
