NASA’s efforts to rescue the Swift Observatory have been halted, leading to the telescope’s impending fiery re-entry later this year. The decision was jointly announced by NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies following complications with the Link spacecraft, which was dispatched to aid the observatory.
Katalyst revealed that Link would not be able to salvage Swift due to issues in controlling the spacecraft, resulting in the telescope’s anticipated descent through the atmosphere after two decades of studying cosmic phenomena such as gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. The demise of the telescope is projected to occur no earlier than October.
In a bid to elevate Swift to a more stable orbit, NASA had allocated $30 million to Katalyst. However, heightened solar activity accelerated the telescope’s descent beyond expectations. The rescue mission encountered setbacks when the spacecraft entered an uncontrollable spin shortly after its launch in July. Despite efforts to stabilize Link’s trajectory, persistent challenges with its orientation and positioning persisted.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed disappointment over the outcome but emphasized the significance of the rescue attempt. As a consolation, Katalyst intends to continue operating Link near the telescope to showcase its potential for future rescue missions.
CEO Ghonhee Lee acknowledged the ambitious nature of the mission, which was executed within a tight timeframe of under a year. Lee highlighted the valuable insights gained throughout the endeavor.
Originally launched in 2004, Swift ceased scientific operations earlier this year to mitigate its descent, orbiting at an altitude of 345 kilometers as of the latest update. Katalyst’s objective was to restore the telescope to its initial orbit of 600 kilometers, enabling prolonged astronomical observations.
Following the setback with Swift, the fate of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope remains uncertain. The aging Hubble, now 36 years old, has also experienced orbital decay due to heightened solar activity. Whether Hubble will receive a rescue mission in light of Swift’s misfortune remains undetermined.
