Nova Scotia-based writer Rachel Reid has generously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library following the imminent closure threat of five branches. Expressing her motivation for the donation, Reid emphasized the importance of utilizing success for the greater good, stating, “I had to do it because I don’t know what the point is of being a successful author in Nova Scotia if you’re not going to use it for good.”
The library board had initially allocated $80,000 from reserve funds to sustain the five endangered branches until September 30. Seeking additional financial support, they requested $351,000 from municipalities to keep the branches in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton operational until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year. While some funding was secured, there remained a shortfall of over $200,000.
In an interview with Radio-Canada, library CEO Julia Merritt expressed gratitude for Reid’s significant donation, ensuring the continued operation of the branches until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Merritt highlighted that the contribution would primarily cover staffing costs for the branches, emphasizing the essential role of libraries in communities.
Rachel Reid, known for the popular “Heated Rivalry” series, credited libraries as vital services that require adequate funding. Reflecting on her personal experience, Reid acknowledged the pivotal role libraries played in her journey as an author, shaping her love for reading and writing from a young age.
Reid’s donation, recognized as one of the largest private gifts in the library’s history, was commended by Merritt for its immense impact on library services and the community. While acknowledging the importance of private contributions, both Reid and library officials stressed the critical necessity of sustained public funding for long-term library sustainability.
The Annapolis Valley Regional Library expressed its commitment to working with government entities to ensure continued access to robust library services across the region. The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage recognized Reid’s donation as a valuable support to library fundraising efforts, emphasizing the shared responsibility in maintaining library services.
Looking ahead, Rachel Reid will partake in a special public event celebrating libraries, reading, and community engagement, further underscoring the significance of community support for public libraries.
Additionally, the Nova Scotia Health Department expressed gratitude towards the local community for their ongoing support towards public libraries, highlighting the collaborative efforts required to sustain and enhance library services.
